Pictures of Pictures

Sarah and Henry brought home the proofs of their school pictures.

They're okay pictures; they just don't quite look like themselves.

The kids spent most of conference weekend coloring. (These are mostly Henry's work because he's just hit a really cute drawing phase.)

Here are a bunch of Halloween pictures they colored and decorated with Halloween stickers and then Sarah made some sort of gallery with them in the living room.

Sarah was all about incorporating the stickers into the scene which I knew she would.
Henry added a Frankenstein monster to each of his. Notice how they get progressively better.

I just found this one in the basement this morning. Cutest little Frankenstein and vampire ever!
And here are Erica's.

So the rest of these are Henry's. His favorite subject other than Frankenstein is drawing himself with his siblings. He's been working on these for about a week.

Erica above, Henry and baby brother below.

Henry and Sarah. Notice the hearts inside their chests.

Here's all of them and it may be my most favorite drawing by Henry ever. His potato shaped head is going to be tough to beat.

Henry declared months ago that the baby was going to be named Bob.

But this week he has changed his mind and the baby is now going to be named Jax.

Isn't "Jax" cute?

Henry and Jax. (This is his "Reflections" contest submission too.)
Closeup of "Jax". I can't wait to see how the real baby compares.
Always a backwards J.
Do you think he's excited? This one has their first initials and their age.
Henry and Jax, bff.
And a bookmark.
As Henry was working on this last one, I said "Henry, what if we don't name him Jax?" (because we're not.) He turns around in complete surprise. "Why?"

I don't know what we're going to name him but it won't be Jax because I think of Ajax cleaner every time and we already have a Jack and Jake in the family. None of these reasons are good enough for Henry.

The Road Less Traveled

School picture day was about a week ago. This is the first year Sarah actually cared about what she wore. I never buy school pictures so I still don't care. But this year, for some reason, she got all stressed about it and carefully picked out an outfit.
I was nice and took her picture at home so it would be worth her while. (I didn't take a picture of Henry that day because he did NOT care.)
Here's my sweet Erica. She's sweet in this picture anyway. To be honest, I cannot figure her out. She is such a monster and totally full of it and way too smart and talks constantly. Last Thursday she would not settle down and take a nap. She whined and cried in her crib for 2 hours about various things. I went in like every 20 minutes and it was something else like her hair elastic or her arm hurt or teddy was too far away. (each trip required me to climb our stairs and I only have about 10 trips a day in me so this was killing me) Finally I got her out. She was lying on the couch watching Daniel Tiger when Justin came home early from work and he asks "Why aren't you taking a nap?" Want to know what she said totally straight-faced? "Mom wouldn't let me take a nap." The nerve!
Sarah and Henry finished up their 100 sticker job charts a few weeks ago and after their Kong Kone reward, I finally got around to printing new sticker charts for them. They colored them for almost an hour after school one day.
 Here are the finished products.

There is a road that starts in Hobble Creek Canyon and ends up in Provo Canyon. It's a road not too many people know about and fewer actually drive. It has some amazing views.

Spanish Fork and Mapleton and probably some Springville too. It was pretty hazy that day from the fires up Diamond Fork so my pictures didn't turn out great but you get the idea.
Oh Maple in all your autumn glory.
We got out to eat dinner and Sarah and Erica went looking for leaves.
It was pretty windy but not too cold.
The kids ended up eating in the back of the car which is really their favorite place to hang out anyway.
Erica is eating the M&Ms out of the trail mix. I grabbed a handful after they were all done and I got all raisins and a cashew.
Here's the Erica I know and love.
And hey, there's the Justin I know and love too. Scope, sandwich, mountains. We only stayed for 30 minutes but pretty sure he'd be content until dark just like this.
This is was our view of Provo from where we ate.
Then we drove 2 more hours on the roughest, bounciest road in the world. I've been on this road twice before (most recently on our first date 11 years ago). It became evident immediately I was not pregnant the last time I traveled this road. I don't have strong core muscles to hold me steady. I had to get out and walk during a particularly long and bouncy part because I started to have contractions that wouldn't quite. If I go overdue, I know where to go.

After two more hours of back and forth, and up and down, slow-going bouncing, we got nearer to Rock Canyon Campground and things smoothed out quite a bit and we saw stuff like this:
(This was the relatively smooth road) Even the kids got tired of being bounced around. It's too bad that the road is so terrible as the foliage and views are perfect the entire way. I'll never take pavement for granted again in my life.

Some things that are going on in our lives:
Erica: Is a champ at using the toilet and wearing underwear. I finally had to give in and potty train her because she was going to do it with our without my help. The first day she went to the toilet like 30 times but only peed twice. I think she was trying to figure out what "needing to go" felt like and erred on the side of caution. The next day only 10 false alarms but I think we're to the point now where she's got it. We started in earnest almost two weeks ago and she has only had 2 accidents. She'll wear a diaper for her nap and at night for the foreseeable future though. When Henry and Sarah are home, I don't have to help her at all; they love to help her.

Henry: Has a love/hate relationship with school. Actually he loves school, he just hates getting ready for it. He resists doing his homework (I'd support him in a boycott if it didn't take 30 seconds to do) and changing into school clothes. He likes to wear ratty old knit shorts and too small stained t-shirts but I draw the line. His clothes don't have to match but they do have to be clean and out of his school clothes pile. He likes learning to read too. Everything is a gun. Every toy car has to crash loudly. Every surface is to be jumped on or from. Potty words are hilarious.

Sarah: Loves school and homework and reading Harry Potter. She just started taking piano lessons from a lady in our ward and it's only been 3 days since her first lesson but she is still pretty stoked about practicing every day ;)  I'm a little sad that she's starting to have drama with friends in the neighborhood and at school. I don't want her to be old enough for friend drama. I don't think she's the petty one or the instigator but she sure comes home all upset about stuff.

Me: I finally got released from my calling so I kind of feel like there's a vacuum in my brain and in my schedule where all that stuff used to be. I'm filling it with naps.

This pregnancy is in it's final 7 weeks and according to the 19-year-old male medical assistant at my last doctor's appointment, "It will go by fast." Oh tell me more about how my fourth pregnancy is going, young man whom I've just met!  And even though I'm in a lot of pain by the afternoon and I feel like my pelvis is going to break apart, I am healthy and the baby is healthy. I just need to manage my strength and energy throughout the next 49 days.

Justin: Hunting, scouting for deer and elk, hunting, camo, buying/selling/trading hunting gear, car shopping, BYU football, practicing elk calls in the car, studying google earth maps, hunting, hunting, hunting. It's a good thing he's handsome. And that November will come.

And here is October's pie of the months. Sugar cream pie. I don't think it will get made again. The cinnamon top was too strong and the bottom crust didn't get cooked well enough.

Once Upon a September

The windows are open and it's 68 degrees in my house in the afternoon. I love you, September. And is anyone else making lists of Christmas gift ideas for their family yet? Just me? I've got Sarah's birthday, Halloween, and Sarah's baptism just before this baby is born and Thanksgiving and Christmas in the six weeks after he comes so I'm pretty much trying to plan/shop/sew for it all starting now. Plus we need to buy a car that will actually fit all six of us. And I gotta figure out where I'm going to put him in this house once he gets here.  And Justin and I may actually have to have a real conversation about what his name is going to be. I do have his blessing outfit though!

Here's the final quilt I made for the baby. It's my favorite one because 3 generations of quilters made it. My mom actually did most of work since it was on frames in her living room but I did the binding because binding is my favorite. (I actually finished it weeks ago during the Olympics but then I left the finished product at my mom's.)

Aren't those animals the cutest? It's going to hang in his room so we'll see it all the time.

Sarah hand-quilted this tree. It was her first time hand-quilting and she loved it. I am so proud of her. Hand-quilting lives on in the next generation!
Here's a sneak peak of Erica as Princess Anna. She got her Halloween costume early so that she can get lots of use out of it. And she does.
Last Saturday was my birthday so on Friday we headed to SLC. We stopped at Cabella's and Ikea, got some lunch then checked into a fancy-pants hotel with the kids. The hotel was full of business travelers and convention goers. Let's just say 3 little kids and a pregnant lady stood out pretty well. On the plus side, we got the pool to ourselves every time.

Henry took some pictures in the room:

Sleeping in the same room with all 4 members of my family isn't exactly my idea of a vacation but the kids did surprisingly well both nights (Erica even slept in a portable crib). Earplugs and mask sure helped.

We just took it easy and toured Temple Square and City Creek.

Why am I always making my kids look into the sun for a picture? Sorry kids!
Some of them love maps, the others love touchscreens.
This log had something to do with the Hill Cumorah exhibit.
More touchscreens.
This is totally a natural pose. He and Erica did not like the organ music in the tabernacle so we waited outside.

This day was also my birthday. I'm 33, with 3 3/4 kids.
After I took this picture below, an Asian lady thought Erica was so cute (Asian tourists think blond kids are the cutest thing and I'm not being racist or stereotypical, just observant.) and Erica thought she was taking a picture of her, not the statue so she kept posing and smiling at her camera as she walked back to me.
These are my people. We wanted to take a tour of the Conference Center but it was closed (as was the children's exhibit at the Church History Museum and the Church Office Building. We did not pick the best day.)
Erica called these lions Jesus Cows. It's not sacrilegious if a 2-year-old says it.
Last but not least, the organist performing in the Assembly Hall played me this song for my birthday. Justin told him I liked Rachmaninoff so he played this just for me. From memory, you guys. It went on for like five minutes. It was so kind of him. Then he went back to the organ and played Halloween music because all organ music sounds like it's from a haunted house.
Then we went back to hotel to swim (again) and then went out to dinner and got ice cream and then back to the hotel to watch the fourth quarter of the BYU game because I'm nice like that. Then on Sunday we headed home via Big Cottonwood Canyon and Midway. That evening we went to my mom's house where a German chocolate cake and my siblings and their kids were waiting for me.
